---------------

Dear Focal Points,

I am pleased to inform you that the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), is hosting the PSIDS COP29 Preparatory Meetings for Climate Change Ministers and Officials. We have traditionally convened the Preparatory Meeting for officials and at COP28 were requested to also convene a preparatory meeting for Ministers.

The PSIDS Ministerial Preparatory Meeting will be convened on Monday 30th September 2024 and the Officials Preparatory Meeting will follow from Wednesday 2nd to Thursday 3rd October 2024. The two Preparatory Meetings will focus on the priority thematic areas for negotiation at COP29 and will allow for discussion on strategic directions and agreed regional positions.

In addition, SPREP and the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) will also convene a Climate Change Ministerial Talanoa with Australia and New Zealand on Tuesday 1st October 2024, ahead of the Officials Preparatory Meeting. The meetings will all be held at the Crowne Plaza Fiji Nadi Bay Resort & Spa in Nadi, Fiji

The Talanoa will provide the opportunity for Australia to update Ministers on the status of their COP31 bid as well as a discussion around shared objectives and partnership arrangements for COP31, which Pacific Leaders have agreed to support. This will also provide an opportunity to discuss engagement and priorities for COP29.

To allow for full Ministerial participation, the Talanoa will be facilitated by Mr Sefanaia Nawadra, the Director General of SPREP and Mr Esala Nayasi, the Deputy Director General of PIFS.

SPREP is grateful for the ongoing support from Australia and New Zealand to assist with the Pacific’s effective engagement at COP. Funding for these Meetings and the Talanoa have been provided by the Government of Australia to support 4 nominations from each of the PSIDS:

• The Minister of Climate Change (1);

• Adviser to the Minister (1);

• Climate Change National Focal Points (2);

We note that this is a busy period for the Ministers and are grateful for their availability for the PSIDS COP29 Preparatory Meeting for Ministers on Monday 30th September 2024 and the PICs Climate Change Ministerial Talanoa with Australia and New Zealand on Tuesday 1st October 2024.

Please convey through your climate change focal points your completed nomination forms to Ms. Teuila Fruean at [email protected] and Ms. Foini Fesolai at [email protected] by the 22 nd August 2024

For further information please contact Mr. Tim Breese at [email protected] and Mr. Ewan Cameron at [email protected]

Yours sincerely,

Tagaloa Cooper

SPREP Officer-in-Charge
