Amplifying the Pacific voice in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt the venue of the 27th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP27) in November, is the Moana Blue Pacific Pavilion.
In the spirit of Pacific Partnership, Aotearoa New Zealand with regional agencies is hosting a Moana Blue Pacific Pavilion for which a significant number of Pacific focused side events will be showcased. This will be similar to the “Pacific and Koronivia Pavilion” at COP24 in Katowice, Poland in 2018 and the “Moana Blue Pacific Pavilion” at COP25 in Madrid, Spain in 2019.
Submissions are now open for side events and will close on 10 September 2022.
Director of SPREP’s Climate Change Resilience programme, Ms Tagaloa Cooper, says, “The events that will be hosted in the Pavilion will be those which will prioritise the building of a resilient Pacific for a resilient world, highlighting issues such as climate change adaptation, capacity building, climate finance, and loss and damage.”
“It will also be a space where the Pacific’s climate ambition will be showcased to the world, including the ways in which the Pacific is taking the lead in delivering ambitious actions to combat climate change such as meeting its respective national climate targets and actions within our own countries to achieve that,” she added.
Adaptation, Article 6, Capacity Building, Climate Finance, Global Stocktake of the Paris Agreement, Loss and Damage, Climate Ambition, Technology development and transfer as well as Transparency in meeting the national climate targets and actions are themes that will be taken into consideration when side event applications are being reviewed.
The overarching themes to be mainstreamed into side events hosted in the Moana Blue Pacific Pavilion are ambitious climate action and commitments for the 1.5-degree Celsius temperature goal; gender equity and social inclusion; protection and sustaining our Pacific Ocean; and our Pacific Island voices, culture and traditions.
“The call for side event applications from Members and Partners, is to ensure that the spirit of Pacific partnership counties and the presence and voice of the Pacific is amplified in this important global platform,” Ms Cooper says.
Side event slots within the Moana Blue Pacific Pavilion will be available from 7 – 18 November 2022, with the first event to being at 10am each day and the last event at 5pm. Each event will be given 50 minutes.
