Steps to enhance Gender Equality and Social Inclusion in our Pacific National Meteorological and Hydrological Services are underway as the region strives to enhance climate information and service delivery for all.
A series of trainings on Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI), will begin in March this year. Integrating gender perspectives into climate change and development priorities is vital for addressing underlying inequalities between men, women, youth and people with disabilities.
“While there has been some progress made over recent years to strengthen our Pacific Meteorological and Hydrological services, there is always room to improve than that the essential climate information products, tools and services are relevant, user-centric and reaches the last mile, across all our Pacific people,” said Mr Salesa Nihmei, Meteorology and Climatology Adviser.
“Our vulnerability to climate change means an increased demand on NMHSs to deliver effective climate information and services within the next decade. We’re doing what we can to ensure that GESI is a core foundation of our work."
This initiative is part of the Australia Pacific Climate Partnership in collaboration with Climate and Oceans Support Programme in the Pacific 2 (COSPPac 2) and Talanoa Consulting funded by the Government of Australia through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
The training is the first of its kind for NMHSs following the regional workshop on Women in Leadership hosted by World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in 2019 in Samoa.
The training will teach people the core concepts of GESI, how and why this is relevant to NMHS climate information and service delivery. Participants will also be engaging in identifying organisational opportunities and barriers to social inclusion.
“We want to ensure effective delivery of services and closer collaboration amongst the providers and users of such information and services. An understanding of GESI will help make this happen,” said Mr Nihmei.
Pacific National Meteorological and Hydrological Services provide relevant weather, climate, water and ocean services to their people that will help them make informed decisions for their safety, socio-economic well-being, prosperity and sustainable livelihoods.”
The first GESI training for Pacific NMHSs will be held on 9 March, 2021.
