A 5-day virtual event organised by Vanuatu Klaemet Infomesen blong Redy, Adapt mo Protekt (Van- KIRAP) in partnership with Vanuatu Meteorology and Geohazards Department, Vanuatu Fisheries Department, Vanuatu Department of Tourism, Vanuatu Public Works Department, Vanuatu Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, APEC Climate Center (APCC), Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) and Commonwealth Scientific Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) took place on November 17th-November 20th and November 24th. The theme of the event was on climate information services to enhance resilience of Vanuatu’s productive sectors. Helping Vanuatu manage and adapt to climate variability and change.
Moirah Matou, VMGD Project Manager, Van KIRAP project said “The sectors have come a long way from designing sector case studies, consultations and carrying site scoping for pilot sites. This week’s zoom call discussions has been excellent, this time to drill further down into piecing all the details of each activity together and illustrating links to the work of our climate scientists( delivery partners) which ultimately leads to demonstrations of CIS to all levels of communities. I am very happy with the participation of our key sector reps, given the project challenges, and covid-19 situation they have been very supportive along in this process.”
The Republic of Vanuatu has created its Framework for Climate Services, making it the first Pacific Island nation to reach this milestone. “The successful provision of climate information and services is a challenge for many Pacific Island nations, which may be hindered by social, financial and infrastructure issues. Vanuatu faces such realities, compounded by resource constraints, significant geographic isolation between and within its more than 80 islands, and over 80% of its population living in rural areas.”
