26th March, 2018 The Project Management Unit of the Green Climate Fund Readiness and Preparatory Support Program conducted its first training in Nuku’alofa , Tonga on Thursday, 22nd March, 2018
Mr. Paula Ma’u, the National Focal Point for GCF and CEO for MEIDECC officially opened this training with more than 25 participants participated on this half day training led by Dr. Netatua Pelesikoti Taufatofua MEIDECC Consultant for the GCF Readiness Programme, who presented a three-part training supported by the GCF Unit. The training included members of the Joint National and Action Plan (JNAP) task force and line Ministries with climate change-oriented priorities interested in accessing the fund in the near future.
This readiness program of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) was established to maximize the effectiveness of this fund and also to build the capacities of national governments and/or institutions in vulnerable countries to increase accessibility and effective management of these funds.
The priority areas of the Tonga-GCF readiness and preparatory support program include;

establishment and strengthening of the Nationally Designated Authority/focal point

development of strategic framework for engagement with the fund

selection of the national implementing entity and support for accreditation
This training aims at building the capacity of the NDA and his supporting team to better understand GCF processes and procedures, their roles and responsibilities under GCF and how to deliver them effectively and efficiently, preparation of the strategic framework/Tonga JNAP2 and country programme, the accreditation status of the National Accredited Entity (Ministry of Finance and National Planning) to access GCF, as well as JNAP Task Force to develop successful project concepts and proposals to GCF for approval.
