Suva, Fiji. May 12, 2016. The European Union (EU) – Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) Adapting to Climate Change and Sustainable Energy (ACSE) Programme awarded the 2016 Gender Competition awards to DIVA for Equality, femLINKpacific and Loloma Silana today.
DIVA for Equality won first prize, femLINKpacific second prize and Loloma Silana third prize.
The 35.5 million euro ACSE regional programme is funded by EU and implemented by various partners including GIZ in fourteen Pacific Island countries and Timor Leste. GIZ is administering 18.6m euros of this through ACSE’s component one.
The European Union Ambassador to Fiji and the Pacific, H.E. Andrew Jacobs; ”Pacific countries and other Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) are on the front line in the battle against climate change and the EU stands shoulder to shoulder with its Pacific partners in their fight against Climate Change. The EU recognises the important role gender equality plays in contributing to all sustainable development outcomes, as a crucial crosscutting thematic area in all of the EU projects and programmes in the region.”
The Gender Competition was launched by Ambassador Jacobs in February this year and was aimed at sharing lessons and experiences in promoting gender responsive climate change measures.
All climate change projects within the Pacific region could apply and a three member independent panel assessed the submissions and reached a conclusion based on the quality, context, approach, results, collaborations and sustainability of each. The prizes include vouchers ranging in value from FJ$ 250 to FJ$ 1000.
