IMO shelves Marshall Islands’ call for global CO2 emissions target

A meeting of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organisation has decided not to accept a proposal to limit shipping’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

The proposal was made by the Marshall Islands, one of the countries most threatened by climate change. Its foreign minister Tony de Brum said: “We present our proposal so that global shipping can be a climate leader.”
