Pacific Small Island States meet in Tonga to discuss budget support modalities for climate change – 25-27th September 2013

8 OCTOBER 2013

The Global Climate Change Alliance: Pacific Small Island States (GCCA: PSIS) implemented by the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) brought together financial, planning and climate change representatives from the nine smaller islands states belonging to the project,  other island representatives, and international and regional organisations and experts to discuss funding support for climate change.

Participants heard about other regions’ experiences, in particular, those shared by Mr. Joseph McGann, of the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre; and the experience of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean with using budget support modalities to access climate finance.

Participants left the meeting with a better understanding of climate change finance modalities that already exist, and future steps that are needed to advance national priorities relating to climate change finance particularly in relation to budget support.

The meeting was particularly useful in bringing together national representatives with public financial management and climate change expertise to collectively advance countries’ pathways towards accessing climate finance.

Meeting participants – Nukualofa, Tonga.
