This report builds on the Nansen Initiative Pacific Regional Consultation on Human Mobility, Natural Disasters and Climate Change in the Pacific. It focuses on land and natural disasters in the Pacific. There are three basic categories of landownership in the Pacific region: customary land, state land and freehold land. In most Pacific States customary land represents more than 80% of the total land area. Even though most land is customary land, there are high rates of migration to informal urban settlements in parts of the Pacific.
