The President of Nauru has welcomed the United Nations’ renewed focus on the world’s small island states yet warned that without urgent international action on climate change, "entire languages, cultures and histories" will be lost to rising sea levels.
President Baron Waqa was speaking at the launch of the UN International Year of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in New York. Nauru holds the chair of the Alliance of Small Island States, a coalition of 44 small island and low-lying coastal countries.
