South Pacific islander loses climate change asylum plea in New Zealand

A man's appeal for refugee status in New Zealand on the grounds of persecution by climate change has been denied.

Thirty-seven-year-old Ioane Teitiota moved to New Zealand from Kiribati -- a South Pacific island that exists two-metres above sea level at its highest point -- in 2007, and remained there illegally after his work permit expired. All three of his children were born there, but after changes to national citizenship laws in 2005 they were not automatically granted domestic status. ...
