SAVE THE DATE – SPREP to convene a meeting for the Pacific to convene under the High Level Support Mechanism, to prepare for COP 22

SPREP, in partnership with Climate Analytics and Charles and Associates will be convening a High Level Support Mechanism (HLSM) meeting, the week of September 27th to 29th, in Apia, Samoa

SPREP, Climate Analytics and Charles and Associates have been implementing such programmes under the HLSM since 2012.  The aim of the High Level Support Mechanism is to help prepare Pacific Ministerial, high level and senior delegates for the United Nations climate change negotiations.

An earlier gathering under the HLSM was held in Samoa, in April this year to look at the implications of the Paris Agreement on climate change for the Pacific, and how the Pacific might implement its provisions.  This meeting resulted in SPREP commencing work on a Paris Agreement Pacific support programme. This programme will package together a series of initiatives for SPREP and other partners to provide support to member countries to ratify and implement the Paris Agreement nationally.

This next session of the HLSM will focus more specifically on the work that needs to be carried out at the next Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP 22), so that Paris Agreement will have a smooth entry into force, either by 2020 or earlier.
