Plight of the small islands - the world’s ‘magnifying glass’

This year was declared the International Year of Small Islands Developing States (Sids), launched by the United Nations in February. 

As the curtains drew to a close on the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States which took place in Apia, Samoa from September 1 – 4, we are reminded of the objectives of this year—not only to celebrate the economic, social and cultural contributions they have made to the world, but also supposed to become more aware of the challenges facing this group of fragile countries, in particular climate change and rising sea levels.
