Pacific nations' leaders tackle climate change in annual forum

Leaders of Pacific island nations and partner countries including the United States and Japan on Tuesday formally kicked off the annual Pacific Islands Forum in this Pacific Ocean state with particular focus on climate change.

"The situation with respect to Pacific island countries with respect to the threat of climate change is real. All these countries are exposed, generally vulnerable, and have absence to technology, other facilities for response, and the necessary capacity to cope," Pacific Islands Forum Secretary General Tuiloma Neroni Slade told a news conference hours before the formal opening of the four-day gathering.
