Pacific Island countries are at the forefront of the impacts of climate change. Coastal erosion, saltwater intrusion, extreme drought, flood and changes in weather patterns are some of the climate change predictions that will impact livelihoods of island nations. In a test of an early climate change action planning program, coastal communities in Gizo, Solomon Islands learnt that they cannot stop climate change and that it will need to be considered in the context of many other drivers of change. While understanding the causes and impacts of climate change in this instance were clearly central to taking an early action for preparedness this study showed there are other barriers that slow the progress for the necessary collective action.
