Climate change, relocation high on PCC’s agenda

Australia, New Zealand and big Pacific Islands countries have been called on to be prepared to accept people fleeing climate change disasters in small Pacific countries.

With rising sea levels, increased salinity in water tables and extreme weather on the rise, the head of the Pacific Conference of Churches (PCC), Reverend Francois Pihaatae says it is inevitable that coastal and estuarine communities will be forced to migrate in the coming years. “We appeal to the nearest big countries of Australia, New Zealand and Fiji to get ready to receive our people. “Once the islands have been subdued by waves and the ocean, they should be ready to receive our people,” he told Islands Business at the end of the 10th General Assembly of PCC in Honiara last month.
