PCCR 2013: Tropical Cyclone Risk Assessment in the Pacific Region - Innovative Tools for Adaptations and Mitigations

PCCR 2013: Tropical Cyclone Risk Assessment in the Pacific Region - Innovative Tools for Adaptations and Mitigations

This is the abstract for a presentation given at the Pacific Climate Change Roundtable, 3-5 July 2013.

The presentation summarized the Tropical Cyclone Risk Assessment in the Pacific Region project, including methods used in the analysis, and presented outcomes of the risk assessment for current and future climate scenarios.

The project aimed to improve understanding of the risks posed by severe TC winds and other hazards to key assets and infrastructure in the Pacific region under current and future climate scenarios. The project covered 15 countries across the Pacific (Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Timor Leste, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu), and examined the impacts of severe winds, flooding and storm surge on buildings, infrastructure and cash crops. This risk information will allow Partner Country governments to better integrate climate risk considerations into infrastructure development and ex-ante disaster planning.
