"Pacific Hydrological Cycle Observing System (Pacific-HYCOS) is a regional project funded by the European Union (EU) through the European Union - Water Facility for African, Caribbean and Pacific countries, (EU-WF ACP). The project is developed under the framework of the World Meteorological Organisation's (WMO) World Hydrological Cycle Observing System (WHYCOS) programme. Other collaborating partners in Pacific HYCOS include United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and the Fiji Meteorological Service. Pacific HYCOS is a regional initiative to improve management and protection of Pacific Island Countries' freshwater resources, through the provision of appropriate water resource management systems. The ultimate objective of the WHYCOS programme is to ""promote and facilitate the collection, exchange, dissemination and use of water-related information, using modern information technologies"".
The Pacific HYCOS project will strengthen human and technical capacity of National Hydrological Services (NHS's) for water resources management to provide high quality, reliable and consistent information for informed decision making on catchment and aquifer management issues in 14 Pacific Island Countries. to develop capacity in the collection, maintenance, analysis and application of water resources data to promote sustainable development and management of freshwater resources. Pacific HYCOS will achieve this through the deployment of appropriate instrumentation, training and capacity building, strengthening of national water resource databases, development of a regional water resource database, and the promotion of sustainable water resource development.
