The Regional Pacific NDC Hub will host its' Country Focal Points and Steering Committee Meeting on Wednesday 29th March 2023 to exchange on updates on the Hub’s third phase country requests, the trainings that will be provided to the Focal Points and to discuss the upcoming plans for the NDC Hub.

The Regional Pacific NDC Hub, which was formed by Pacific Island nations for Pacific Islands nations in 2019, has helped Pacific Island Countries find data, resources, and expertise needed to implement Pacific climate targets - the ‘Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) defined by each country following the Paris Agreement. The Paris Agreement concluded in 2015 represents a collective effort of countries to limit the rise of global temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Within its scope, the Hub currently serves 14 member countries: Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, Niue, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu.

This Regional Focal Point Meeting includes all the members of the Hub and will be the first of two focal point meetings for the year. The second meeting to be held in August in Nadi, Fiji.

Regional Pacific NDC Hub Project Manager Iris Cordelia Rotzoll welcomes the regional representation featuring the heads of the subregions within the Pacific and the heads of the implementing partners, namely the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), Secretariat of the Pacific Environment Programme (SPREP), the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.

“It is always an exciting occasion to get together and exchange with the high-level representatives of our partner countries as they portray the people that we serve. The Focal Point meeting is a space and time to reconnect and to update each other on the progress reached over the last 6-8 months.”

The overall objective of the NDC Hub is to support PICs in reviewing, enhancing, and implementing their climate commitments. This will help to achieve their climate targets and directly contribute to a sustainable and resilient development. It will also promote a transition to a low-carbon development pathway in the Pacific.

The Hub works in contribution to the NDC Partnership, a global coalition of countries and institutions collaborating to drive transformational climate action through sustainable development.

The Regional Pacific NDC Hub is managed by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and implemented in partnership with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), the Pacific Community – SPC and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP). Mobilizing this wide range support to the Pacific would not have been possible without the kind and generous support of the donors of the NDC Hub.

The NDC Hub implements its activities with financial support from the European Union, the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) of Germany, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) of Australia and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) of New Zealand.
